Priene
Room Description
Built on the slopes of Mount Samsun (ancient Mycale), about 40 km south of Selçuk, Priene is one of the most elegant cities of ancient Ionia, overlooking the Meander Plain. The city’s orderly grid-plan streets make it one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning. All the streets cross each other at right angles; every house was designed to receive equal daylight and an equal view of the plain.
At the center of the city rises the Temple of Athena, five of whose elegant columns still stand today. Built by the famous architect Pytheos, this temple is considered the textbook example of the pure Ionic architectural order. With its ancient assembly hall (Bouleuterion), theater, and quiet streets, Priene offers an extremely peaceful discovery away from the crowds. About a 45-minute drive (40 km) from our hotel, the city can easily be combined with Miletus and Didyma for a wonderful day trip.
