Located 50 km south of Selçuk, near today’s village of Balat, Miletus was one of the most powerful port cities of antiquity. Once opening onto the Mediterranean through four separate harbors, the city was a capital of trade, philosophy, and science. Some of history’s first natural philosophers, such as Thales, were raised on this soil. Over time, silt carried by the Meander River filled in the coastline, leaving the city stranded far from the sea.

Miletus’s most magnificent structure is its massive ancient theater, which seated 15,000 people; its corridors and wide rows of seating still stand impressively today. The city is also the birthplace of Hippodamos, the father of urban planning, who gave the world the grid-plan system. With the İlyas Bey Mosque and the remains of a historic bathhouse, Miletus is one of the most enjoyable stops on the Priene and Didyma route.
