Ayasuluk Castle & Basilica of St. John
Room Description
Overlooking Selçuk, Ayasuluk Hill brings together traces of three different civilizations in a single view. At its summit rises the castle, carrying layers from the Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. Right beside it lie the remains of the magnificent basilica that Emperor Justinian built in the 6th century over the tomb of the Apostle John (St. John), once one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Christian world.
At the foot of the hill, the İsa Bey Mosque, dating from 1375, completes this historical picture with its elegant architecture. Antiquity, Byzantium, the Seljuks, and the Ottomans stand side by side here. Just 500 meters from our hotel, this hill is one of the region’s most beautiful sunset spots, thanks to both its rich history and its commanding view over the Selçuk Plain.
